Pregnancy Q & A

Should I seek medical care before pregnancy?

Yes, you should schedule a preconception appointment at Oakland Macomb Obstetrics & Gynecology, P.C., if you’re trying or planning to get pregnant.

During the pre-pregnancy visit, your provider performs a comprehensive history and physical, including a pelvic exam. They also identify problems that may affect you or your baby during pregnancy.

Your preconception appointment also gives you and your provider an opportunity to discuss healthy lifestyle habits that you can implement now to increase your chances of a healthy pregnancy. This may include smoking cessation, taking a prenatal vitamin, and engaging in regular exercise.

When do I start prenatal care for my pregnancy?

Oakland Macomb Obstetrics & Gynecology, P.C., usually schedules the first prenatal appointment about eight weeks after your last menstrual period.

However, you should contact the office as soon as you know you’re pregnant to schedule your appointment. If you have factors that indicate a high-risk pregnancy, such as a history of diabetes or advanced maternal age, the office may schedule your first appointment sooner than eight weeks.

How often do I need pregnancy care?

Early and ongoing prenatal care is important for you and your baby’s health. The frequency of your prenatal visits depends on how far along you are in your pregnancy and your personal health needs.

For a normal healthy pregnancy, you can expect prenatal appointments:

  • Once a month up through week 32

  • Twice a month from week 32 through week 36

  • Weekly visits from week 36 until birth

During your follow-up pregnancy care visits, your provider at Oakland Macomb Obstetrics & Gynecology, P.C., conducts various screenings to assess and monitor you and your baby’s health.
