Ultrasound Q & A

What is an ultrasound?

An ultrasound is a diagnostic imaging test. It uses sound wave technology to generate images of the internal organs in your body.

It’s one of the safest imaging tests, which is why Oakland Macomb Obstetrics & Gynecology, P.C., uses it during pregnancy.

During an ultrasound, the ultrasound technician uses a transducer that sends sound waves into your body, which bounce off your organs and return to the transducer.

The transducer transmits the sound waves to a computer that translates them into real-time images.

What type of ultrasound might I receive?

Whether you are pregnant or need a diagnosis for a women’s health issue, Oakland Macomb Obstetrics & Gynecology, P.C., may perform a:

Transabdominal ultrasound

During a transabdominal ultrasound, the transducer goes over your abdomen.

Transvaginal ultrasound

With a transvaginal ultrasound, the ultrasound technician uses a special transducer they place in your vaginal cavity. This ultrasound may help find abnormalities in your reproductive organs not visible with a transabdominal ultrasound.

What is a 3D/4D ultrasound?

Oakland Macomb Obstetrics & Gynecology, P.C., is excited to offer 3D/4D ultrasound testing for pregnant women. This advanced ultrasound system creates 3D images of your baby that allow you to see more detail than a traditional 2D ultrasound.

The 4D ultrasound provides live-action shots of your baby as they move around in your womb.

When do I need an ultrasound during pregnancy?

Ultrasound testing is part of your routine prenatal care. Most pregnant women undergo two ultrasound tests during their pregnancy.

Typically, your provider at Oakland Macomb Obstetrics & Gynecology, P.C., performs your first ultrasound test at your first prenatal visit. This test helps your provider estimate your due date.

Your provider conducts the second ultrasound test between weeks 18 and 22 of your pregnancy to evaluate your baby and your reproductive organs.

3D/4D ultrasound testing at Oakland Macomb Obstetrics & Gynecology, P.C., is a special service. The practice recommends you schedule this test between 26 and 34 weeks of pregnancy.

This ultrasound isn’t part of your usual prenatal care. However, the 3D/4D ultrasound serves as a special bonding experience for you, your family, and your unborn baby.

When do I need a gynecological ultrasound?

Oakland Macomb Obstetrics & Gynecology, P.C., also uses ultrasound imaging to evaluate your reproductive organs. You may need a gynecological ultrasound to confirm or rule out the underlying cause of your pelvic pain or abnormal bleeding.

Your provider may use a gynecological ultrasound to diagnose:

  • Ovarian cysts
  • Fibroids
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Placement of your intrauterine device (IUD)
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Endometriosis

Ultrasounds can also evaluate structural abnormalities that may explain fertility problems.
