About Dr. Sharon Helmer


Sharon R. Helmer, M.D., joins Oakland Macomb Obstetrics & Gynecology, P.C., as the Medical Director and Radiologist for the Oakland Macomb Breast Center. Dr. Helmer offers personal, hands-on care to patients in Rochester Hills, Michigan, with 30 years of experience in breast imaging. 

Dr. Helmer was born and raised in Michigan, growing up in a small town on a farm before attending the University of Michigan for her undergraduate degree and Wayne State University for medical school. She then completed her diagnostic radiology residency at Oakwood Hospital and Medical Center and is board certified by the American Board of Radiology. 

Before joining Oakland Macomb Obstetrics & Gynecology, P.C., Dr. Helmer served as Section Chief of Ultrasound and Women’s Imaging at the VA Medical Center in Detroit. Before that, she was the Clinical Service Chief Imaging Department and Director of the Breast Imaging Program at Karmanos Cancer Center for many years. She has also served as the Director of both the Mammography Division and Radiology Resident Program at Oakwood Hospital and Medical Center. 

Over her impressive career, Dr. Helmer has received many awards and accolades, including the Karmanos Cancer Institute Heroes of Breast Cancer Compassionate Caregiver Award in 2013. She is passionate about breast screening exams and feels strongly that mammography saves lives. 

In her spare time, Dr. Helmer enjoys photography and spending time with her family. Her family includes two daughters and a son, and two grandsons.

The entire family at Oakland Macomb is honored to have Dr. Helmer working among us. She provides a level of compassion and service to patients that is unparalleled.   

The Oakland Macomb Breast Center, and Dr. Helmer, can be found in the private comfort of Suite 350 in the Rochester Hills office. The center provides everything from screening mammography to diagnostic procedures, all done with the state-of-the-art Genius 3D mammography and ultrasound, and includes cyst aspirations and stereotactic technology.
